About wood finishes

Starting with the simple process of blending shades of oak through exposure to ammonia fumes, we’re able to control the finished look of a piece without the use of dyes or stains.

With a long the exposure to ammonia, we create our “dark fumed oak.” Fuming the piece to dark will decrease the contrast between boards that have been in contact with the wine and those that haven't. The finished look is close to walnut.

For a lighter look that shows the contrast between the wine stained oak and the oak from the other side of the cask, choose “light fumed oak.” This option will also give a stronger chance of reds and burgundies showing through in the final finish.

Looking for a nice blend of both? Choose our “medium fumed oak.” This option finishes out with a rich blend of browns. Less contrast than in the light option, but a little of that wine character still shows through. This is our favorite choice.
